Severe Morning Sickness Does Exist
Every pregnancy comes with some sort of morning sickness during the early stages with the common symptoms of vomiting, nausea and tiredness. However this is all normal and doesn’t put your baby at any risk, clearing up at around week 12 of your pregnancy.
Approximately 2% of women will go through what is called Hyperemesis Gravidarum (also known as HG) which is the term for severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Evidently not very common, there is a chance of it being hereditary. Symptoms include severe vomiting and/or nausea, fatigue, weight loss, dizziness and headaches (caused by dehydration and nutritional deficiency), with the difficulty of keeping fluids down.
Around week 21 of your pregnancy, HG usually subsides, however there has been cases where women have suffered throughout their whole pregnancy. But don’t panic too much when going through your morning sickness ritual. If it gets to the point where it doesn’t feel normal and it’s causing too much distress, please book an appointment with your local GP.
